Introduction

The book is collected works of The 3rd International Symposium on Scientific and Legal Aspects of the Regimes of the Continental Shelf and the Area. 2012 witnessed the 30th anniversary of United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The symposium was designed to discuss issues on scientific and legal aspects of the regimes of continental shelf and the area. China Institute for Marine Affairs and Second Institute of Oceanography sponsored the meeting. Delegates, experts and scholars from organizations including UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, International Seabed Authority and International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea handed in their treatises on the further development of continental shelf and the area to be discussed. Some 30 articles written by experts, scholars and officials from Germany, Mozambique, Russia, Belgium, Denmark, the U.S.A etc. were divided into 5 sections. Resource development and marine environment protection, theory and practice on continental shelf extension and the area, issues development and international arbitration could also be found in this book.
