To the ancient Chinese, the heavens had an independent will and were not controlled by people’s wishes. The heavens determined and manipulated the fate of all human society in accordance with its own will; all human disasters and blessings were displays of such will. Only when people acted according to the will of the heavens could they avoid disaster. Humans could only obey the heavens, could not ask favor from or ever try to change the heavens.
